Pécs
is the capital of the komitat, already in Roman time was it an
important traffic junction and with the name Sopianiae capital of the
province Valeria. The city - named by the German minority
Fünfkirchen "Five
Churches" - is lain in a far valley basin at the southern slopes of the
Mecsek Mountains.
1367 in the city the first university of Hungary was founded. This
foundation of king Lajos the Large is still today very popular, 20.000
students are registered at it nowadays. Until today are some stony
remnants of the Turk time
retained,
here not a church, but a mosque stands on the central place of the
city. The cathedral however stands little off the centre. The
original
Roman Saint Peters Church from the 11th and 12th century and is a
basilica with not less than four towers and medieval crypt.
Despite
of repeating myself, the cathedral complex is surely worth seeing. In
direct proximity we find a piece world cultural heritage: the early
Christian cemetery, for Europe, a unique monument from the 4th and 5th
century. The entire city area consists remarkably well reconditioned
historical buildings and picturesque corners, the old town with its
landmarks and pictorial views are possible again and again. The
porcelain museum Zsolnay gives a good overview of present and
historical products of the in Pécs resident porcelain
manufacture. Also the exhibitions of paintings are worth mentioning,
the painters Victor Vasarely and Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka
for
example are constantly exposed. All cultural objects of interest to
enumerate is impossible at this place, because anywhere except in
Budapest are as many Hungarian art collections found as in this city.
In
the west of Pécs there is the former border fortress of
Szigetvár. Today some walls of the former fortification are
left
only, but the visitors are impressed of the ruin of this medieval brick
building. Nearby the castle ruin is the historical centre of
Szigetvár worth seeing. The town has today also athermal bath,
in the appropriate chapter details are described about bath and city.
In the north of the city the Zselic is lain, a nature resort at the
border to theSomogy
county, in it's
chapter the Zselic is described. The protected nature area laid in
former times - just as Szigetvár itself - in the Somogy,
came
however with a regional reorganisation to the Baranya.
When
we talk about the Mecsek Mountains, then we think directly about the
lakes of Orfű. That is both right as wrong. Of course, the lakes are
lain in a picturesque surrounding, have beautiful beaches and many
sport facilities. The mill museum on the Eastern lakeshore is surely
worth being visited. According to the water-rich landscape one finds
here naturally a water mill, in addition for example a course mill
turned by horses, a miller's house etc. The processing of this
handicraft is presented, here flour is still milled and bread is still
baked here, the products can be bought by the visitors in the museum.
But Orfű is surely not the only interesting place of the Mecsek
Mountains. In the small village Abliget the stalactite cavern is a
special object of interest, the cavity is the largest underground
stalactite labyrinth in Southern Transdanubia. Along an underground brook we
walk a 1,600 feet into the mountain.
In
front of the cavity entrance the brook feeds a lake that can be
explored by boat. With Magyarhertelend there is also an excellent
therapeutic bath at the slopes of the Mecsek Mountains. For
details over thermal baths in Southern Transdanubia we refer to our
information about thermal baths. The Zengő is the highest top of the
Mecsek and also the highest mountain of the entire region between Lake
Balaton and river Drava. Around its slopes are a lot of interesting
resorts. Zengővárkony is a centre of rural culture. In the
village museum among other things a functional weaving mill and an
exhibition of filigree decorated eggs of all kinds can be found. Next
to the place there is a forest of sweet chestnuts, in which the film
producer Pál Rockenbauer is buried.
At the Southern slopes
of the Zengő lies Pécsvárad. The place was as a
foundation
of the holy king Steven, the first king of Hungary, an important centre
of the organisation of the young state. In the old castle nowadays a
museum worth seeing is accommodated, it functions however also as
hotel. At the Northern slopes of the Zengő
Püspökszentlászló lies in a
small, remote
valley. Here is a Arboretum, in which enormous trees and numerous
protected and exotic plants prosper. The neighbouring
Kisújbánya was founded of Swabians, here flowered
above
all the handicraft of the glass blowers. The former population moved
away, therefore the houses are used as vacation homes today and the old
sight of the village is outstanding preserved. In the east of the
mountains we find Mecseknádasd. The place offers with the
ruins
of two medieval castles a review into history. The Réka
castle
became famous as place of birth of the holy Margaret of Scotland.
Inside the Roman gothic Saint Steven's Chapel from the 13th century
gothic murals can visited.
Beside
the classical Blue Portuguese, the Hungarian Kékporto, here in
the meantime prosper Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir as well.
The high point of each wine year is the Villány Red Wine
Festival in the first weekend of the month October. During this event
there are parades of the three in the Baranya living ethnic groups and
delegations of the neighbouring Croats. Beside the wine the environment
impresses also by its landscape and culture-historical aspects. Each
traveller will keep the long row closely at closely built
wine-press-houses in the lovely landscape around Palkonya in memory,
exactly the same as the cellars of Villánykövesd. Also one
of the most important architectural monuments of entire Hungary is to
be found in the region. On a steep rock of the Villány Hills
rises the castle from Siklós. Lapidarium, ceramic exhibition and
dungeons of the castle can be visited, by special interest are also the
rocky niches from the early Renaissance. In direct proximity of the
Villány also the most visited thermal bath of the Baranya is
lain, Harkány. The aspects of a cure in Harkány are
described in the chapter about the thermal baths.
Between
the towns Siklós and Sellye extends a flat landscape, the
Ormánság, with only few elevations along the river Drava.
Here we do not only find one of the few places in entire Europe where
the river courses are not canalised.
Accordingly the region is regularly flooded, which brought the
residents to build their settlements on the places with relatively
highest altitude, in Hungarian called "ormok", So the entire landscape
Ormánság has got it's name by these. The landscape
invites to be explored by foot, by bicycle or on the back of horses.
The churches in Adorjás and Drávaiványi,
Kórós and Kovácshida are characterised by their
painted, wooden coffered ceilings. In Sellye one should visit both the
Ormáság Museum, and the Arboretum.
Among
the valuable nature areas of the region are the alluvial forests of the
two large rivers, in which still many rare plant species can be found.
Since 1996 the region around Danube and Drava the national park Duna -
Drava was founded on a surface of 50,000 hectares. It's primarily
purpose is the protection of the old river arms, alluvial forests and
sumps. Most special is a visit of the nature-left bank of the Drava.
Along the meander there is today a refugium for many rare plant
species. Thus we find here for example the original Juniper Berry left.
The
colonies of the bank swallow at the in parts steep banks of the Drava
make a special impression onto all visitors. This area forms also one
of the most varied biotopes for robbery birds on our continent. Even
gerfalcons and sea eagles are to be found here. Also red deer and
fallow deer, adders or beavers can be observed here. An appropriate
landscape form offers the part of the national park Duna Drava which
was located at the Danube. In the original forests along the river and
its dead arms live numerous rare, protected kinds of bird, one finds
here for example kingfishers, storks and herons.
Here
at this place the medieval Hungary ended on the battleground, when the
army under guidance of king Lajos II was completely defeated in 1526 by
the Turkish aggressors, still today's day a trauma of the entire
nation.
At
this historical moment reminds a memorial place in the south of the
city. The church established here is a symbol of the nation's unity and
the harmony. It is constructed on earth from all Hungary. From all
yards of the komitat houses, from 52 cities and from each of the more
than 3000 municipalities one kilogram earth is brought here. Also in
the traditions the foreign rule remained present, in the carnival is
the "Turk Fright" a firm component. Where in other place the winter is
to be driven out with terrible looking masks, here the inhabitants have
the aim to drive out the Turks out of Mohács and the country
symbolically
