Baccus, god of wines, seems to love the Hungarian country very much. The country is given many different kinds of ground and very much sun. By those gifts a rich wine-culture can be found since centuries.

And of course it have been the antique Rome again that has brought the grapes into the Pannonian Basin. All in this area settling peoples have cultivated the wine and during the conquest by the Hungarians the famous vineyards of Tokaj were given to selected nobles by Árpád in 896. Centuries later this wine was called "Wine of the kings - king of the wines" by the French king of sun Louis XIV. Those days entire Europe love the elixir from Hungary.

Hungary has 22 different wine areas where the most different wines are produced. The most divergent grapes are used and so in the vineyards many varieties of good wines are produced. Visit together with us the wine areas of Southern Transdanubia.

Northern bank of Lake Balaton

Badacsony

These are the firing wines from the extinct volcano. The southern slopes of the Badacsony end in Lake Balaton. The wines are firing, embracing, full of taste and have a gentle acrid.  In good years the wines have a high natural component of sugar. Mainly Olazrizling, Szürkebarát and Kéknyelü can be found.

 Balatonmellék

Under influence of the ground of a former part of the potash basin and the surrounding hills of volcanic anterior very tasty wines are cultivated here. They have a high acrid and a pleasant bouquet. Although they are heavy the wines are mostly very elegant. Here Olaszrizling, Riszlingzilváni, Chardonnay, and Zöldveltelini are found.

Balatonfüred - Csopak

This is one of the oldest wine areas of Hungary. The red earth gives rise to firing wines. The area is well known for a very good ecological balance. Mainly Olazrizling grows here, but the peninsula Tihány is famous for red wines. Those are heavy and delight by their aroma and a piquing acid. The white wines charm by a slight almond taste.

Somogy

After the grapes of the region were destroyed by phylloxera a new, flowering wine area grows. There is a broad choice of high quality wines; they are tasty, fully of aroma and elegant. Olaszrizling, Chardonnay, Királyleányka, Rajnai, Rizling, Muscat Ottonel, Kékfrankos and Cabernet Sauvignon grow here.

Tolna

Szekszárd

In this area with Mediterranean character very tasty wines are produced. The wines have a beautiful colour, and are firing and tender the same time. The Szekszardi Bikáver is one of the best regional wines. In former times the Kakarda dominated, but today Kékfrankos, Cabernet Franc and Merlot are the most important grapes.

 Tolna

Here grow tasty wines. They have a fresh and fruity taste and have a light character. We find a broad spectrum of Olaszrizling, Chardonnay, Tramini, Zöldveltelini and Sauvignon Blanc.

Baranya

Mecsekalja

On the hills of this region high quality grapes grow and they guarantee a spicy wine. Formerly Kakarda was most important. Nowadays white wines dominate the area. Mostly they are tender, but full of aroma and taste. Mostly the grapes Olaszrizling, Chardonnay and Cirfandli can be found.

Villány - Siklós

In the region of Villány famous red wines grow, the "firing wines of the devil". The Mediterranean climate causes delicious Bordeaux-like, heavy red wines. Here wooden barrels still are common and they are capable for a full taste and high quality. Nearby Siklós we find white wines of high quality. They have a natural sweet taste. Mostly Olaszrizling, Kékoportó, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Hárslevelü grow here.
